Coming back from being sick

Posted by on February 2, 2013

So last weekend I had a super-fun trip to Denver to meet Team Rev3. Problem was I’d been running at 120% capacity (due to work and kid stuff) for probably 6 weeks.

Then I get up at 4am, sit in a metal tube (airplane) next to a lady who is 3 breaths away from death, and stay up drinking until 1am the next night… do masters @ 5200ft then another all day and late night… then fly home next to another lady who I think might have had the bubonic plague. Not sure, just sayin’.  I got moved to another seat, but still she wasn’t far… and she was breathing my air… and I blame her.  Just sayin’

Enough about that… I should be able to go 120% forever right? Well, nope. Monday morning I woke up with a headache… and stuffed up… and sore sore throat and… crap. I’m sick. This is exactly what my boys went through a few weeks ago. Darnit.

The nice thing about being a consultant is I can flex my schedule. So I worked from home, napped, worked, napped, repeat… for FOUR FREAKIN DAYS. About to go out of my mind. No workouts I think I gained 50lbs (ok I didn’t but STILL!).

Friday I was ready and cleared by the coach but…. early work day which turned also into a late work day (lots of catching up) so nope.  FINALLY Tonight at 7pm I got a chance to get on my bike and ride. 30min EZ. Just get a sweat going – Coach’s orders. Mission accomplished. Felt great.

What’s my point? My point is this… when you’re sick you have to pull back and recover. When it’s a virus, you really have no darn choice. When you’re ready to go… wait a day. Or two. It’s horrible I know but if you don’t, you’re going to risk getting sick all over again and being out longer. Last June when I raced Escape from Alcatraz 7 days out from a nasty virus. Thought I was ok, I wasn’t. Effectively killed my races in June and July too. Trashed my whole tri season.

But I think I’m ready. Good thing… Masters Swim meet tomorrow!  I plan to take it easy. We will win this meet with sheer numbers. So no Herculean efforts. This race is all about extending my limits and breaking the comfort zone. I’m swimming 500free, 100IM, 50back, 100back, 200IM. Oh, and by the way, except the 500 I pretty much stink real bad every one of those events. I’m not sure I’ll survive the 200IM actually. But  hey, it’ll be fun trying!

Game on.

Good luck in your meet – and 200IM is the race! (My fav by far!) And yes – being sick blows. It’s hard to back off, but sometimes you have no choice! Glad you are feeling better!
